Woodworm

Woodworm is a generic term used for various types of wood boring beetles, which have the potential to cause severe damage to structural and non-structural timbers within buildings. The most common type is known as Anobium Punctatum or "common furniture beetle". Other examples include: Xestobium Rufovillosum "deathwatch beetle", Hylotrupes Bajulus "house longhorn beetle", Ernobius Mollis "bark borer beetle" or "waney edge borer". There are many other types which can be identified should they be present in your building.

Certain types of wood boring insects, such as the bark borer beetle, do not need chemical treatment. Such an example highlights the need for correct identification at inspection stage to prevent unnecessary use of insecticides due to misdiagnosis. The mere presence of flight holes or surface damage along the grain of the timber does not necessarily mean that it is currently active.

Unfortunately, some unscruplous contractors may carry out an inspection and recommend expensive, unnecessary and often disruptive treatments, that may not even be required. By instructing Darroch Remedial Inspections to carry out a timber infestation investigation you can be assured of correct identification of any infestation present and the need (if any) of specific remedial treatments.
